I also believe John Mark (author of the Gospel of Mark) may have some contribution to some of Paul's learning of Christ (2 Timothy 4:11). John Mark was also a cousin of Barnabas (Col. 4:12) whom also accompanied Paul for some time. John Mark also was close to Peter (1 Peter 5:13). So is it possible Mark played a heavy role in Paul's fellowship. I believe he contributed. Just like I believe the book of Mark was actually Peter's testament of Jesus, just authored by Mark; for Mark was only a young man when Jesus died on the cross (Mark 14:51-52).

Hi to all,

My father passed away on Easter Sunday. I have a VHS tape that he made some years ago with various holiday gatherings on it and I would like to convert the VHS to DVD to make copies to give to my family when I go back for his memorial.

Does anyone have a VHS player that I could even watch the video on? What would be awesome is if someone has one that can record from VHS to DVD so that I could make a master copy. I don't have money to go to a professional place, so any help from the community would be awesome.

Thank you in advance for your consideration.
Peace, Lisa

Andrea - you are killing me! I am teaching a 2 day class on theology on June 24 & 25. I suggest you come. I just can't keep answering all these questions individually.

For your evil question (one of the most vexing questions in theology!) check out MacArther's article:

Glen,

Where did evil come from? Is there even an answer to that huge question? Genesis 2:9 is the first place where I can find it mentioned, the "tree of the knowledge of good and evil". So, was evil created? If so, why? Is it because everything has to have an opposite, like Newton's third law 'to every action there is an equal and opposite reaction' (I was a civil engineer before becoming a stay at home mom. Hence the nerdiness). Was the serpent who communicated to Eve actually Satan?

Thanks.

Thanks Glen. I agree with you about how as God's people we are to make all aspects of the world holy. In the past year, I've been finding it so easy to see God's hand...hearing a song not sung by a Christian artist, looking at a billboard, reading a magazine, etc. It amazes me how He is everywhere and I was so blind to it for so long. Have you taken part in Focus on the Family's 'The Truth Project' study? It is a great study. All truth is God's truth is a key point, just like you said.

Regarding the Blind Side movie, I was attempting to tell my mom that I didn't believe the movie was what she believed it was. I could go into an entire discussion about that, but it's not appropriate here!

Thanks again for your time.

Hi Andrea;

Yes, secular means "of the world" and is usually used as referring to the non-spiritual. Not addressing your issue with the Blind Side yet, I want to address the whole idea of "secular." Jesus makes it clear - we are in the world but not of the world. We are to bring God into the world. I dislike and think it is dangerous to try and separate life into spiritual and secular. Here's why. As God's people we are to make all aspects of the world holy or spiritual. That does not mean all things are holy. But reading the newspaper can be spiritual or secular - depending on how we approach it. Same with TV, exercise, driving, you name it. I am to make the secular holy.

I haven't seen the Blind Side yet but I will. But I wouldn't see it to make sure it is Christian or just to affirm what i think about Christianity. I look for God's truth and the good - no matter where it comes from. All truth is God's truth. Even "non-Christians" or Christians who act badly can still live out and speak truth (even if they don't know it).

Sorry Glen, here I go again.

I recently saw a movie called 'The Blind Side'. It's a movie based on a true story, with a supposed Christian thread. Though references to God were made (in a positive light), and the story followed how one family made a difference in one young man's life, I didn't feel it portrayed mature Christianity in a true light. That is, the Christian characters exhibited some behavior/said some things that were of the world, not of Jesus. My mom asked me if I liked it, and I said I thought it was kinda secular. She asked me what that meant, I answered 'well, secular means not believing in God'. I think secular means of the world, not of God. My mom wasn't so sure of that, she looked it up in the dictionary and quoted different than what I believe secular to mean. Of course I looked it up too, but I told my mom I'd ask you what you thought.

After that long rambling, am I correct in thinking that secular means of the world, not of God. Did I say it wrong the first time (i.e. not believing in God). It's a basic question, I know. I just want to be conveying correct information.

Thanks for your time. Thanks also for the message today.

Andrea

On one level we are accountable for what we know (Romans 1:18-22). The Romans 1 passage seems to suggest that creation is enough. Paul is being clear that God is knowable and can be experienced. Paul is talking about the Gentiles (his final point is that Jew and Gentile are without excuse and have sinned - 3:23). Here he is particularly focusing on the sins of idolatry and immorality. What is not clear is how broad Paul intends to be in this text. Rom. 1:18 is clearly directed to those who intentionally suppress the truth. Does Paul intend to include the person who's had no contact with any of the revealed teachings of God (old or new)? Is Paul going beyond rejection of truth to also include ignorance of truth? Tough to know for sure.

My bottom line is this. If I were the "heathen" (I hate that term) you refer to - I would rather have clear teaching that I can accept or reject, rather than rely on my wisdom figuring out God from creation & experience alone. That is why I am passionate about missions - giving a clear teaching of the Good News. On the other hand, if I never had access in any way to any teaching about God and Jesus (they do exist today too), my trust is in a good, wise and just God who will always do what is right. In the end, God is the final judge. He judges in a way I can't - praise the Lord. Does that mean for sure the one who has not heard will be granted mercy? I don't know. Condemned? I don't know for sure. I don't know all the circumstances of every life and the "witnesses" or revelation they had. My job - get the word out the best I can. God's job - judge the individual.

Dear Glen,

This is a common question, but I gotta ask it anyway. How does God handle those who haven't heard of Jesus? Say there's someone living in a remote country that has never heard about God and His plan for salvation. And what if that someone has been taught, since they were a baby, to worship a wooden statue. Maybe this wouldn't be so likely to happen today, but how about 100 years ago? Or 200? I have a genuine concern for a person like this.

I've read a couple of articles (always considering the source) that address this topic, but I still don't get it. Maybe I need to accept that God will deal fairly with people who haven't heard of Him.

Thanks,
Andrea

Okay, I'm guessing the word tabernacle could be used in different ways (both a verb and a noun) in OT times (maybe even today?).

Re: the Christmas light thing - I desired a pastors insight, and am glad I asked! I sappose everything can be viewed as secular, can't it?

Hi Andrea;

Jn 1:3-14 ties the idea of light and tabernacle (dwell vs. 14 actually is the word "tabernacle"). So there could be a connection, but not is directly made.

A simple google search can help you find the origin of Chistmas lights. My view is that EVERYTHING can be secular until we make it holy. A Christmas light can be secular or holy - depending on how we view it, use it, etc. It is our calling to make that which is "profane" or "common" (the OT word) holy, the secular spiritual.

Glen,

Alright, here's another. I really do hope I'm not intruding on your time too awfully much.

The Bible study I'm currently in has touched on the Feast of Tabernacles, and how amazing it must've been when all those people gathered had lit their lamps in the evening. Thousands of lights all around must've been a beautiful sight. So I'm sitting there, wondering if there is any significance between that and when Jesus declares 'I am the light of the world'. Is there any connection? Also, how about Christmas lights? Do you know the origins of Christmas lights? Is it a secular thing, or does it have something ( or nothing!) to do with Jesus being the light of the world?

Andrea

You might be thinking of James 1:13-18. Take a look and see if that does not "refute" the idea. However, the word trial and testing in the original language is the same word. Does God allow trials - yes. Also check out James 1:2-8 for balance and Hebrews 12:4-13 (discipline).

Hi Lorraina! It has been a while since I posted, I started a new job and it has kept me busy. How are things on your end? You were 5 weeks post op, are you feeling better? I was happy to hear of your reconciliation with your dad and stepmom...that truly is awesome!!! So, just checking in and look forward to hearing from you! <img src="http://forums.pccwired.org/my-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_smile.gif" title=":)" class="bb_smilies" /> Lisa

Hi Spiritedgal, wow it has been awhile since I have posted. I have found employment, although not through here. I have to say that even though nothing happened for me here, it was still a tool to use because you just never know where someone might be looking. I started my job a month ago, were you able to find work yet? If not, I wish you many blessings in the search, and if you have found employment, my prayers are for continued success!!! Peace, Lisa

Glen

I've been thinking more about my question of what to say to people when they claim God is testing them. I don't think I clarified it enough the first time. What I meant to ask was, does scripture refute this claim? If so, could you cite specific verses? I'm thinking it does refute this, but haven't been able to come up with a word or phrase to look up (in the index or concordance). I always desire to find out what God's Word says about something. I agree, short canned answers don't change a person (I speak from experience!), but if there was ever an appropriate time to cite specific places in the Bible where it does/does not refute this claim, then I'd like to know where.

Thanks,
Andrea

Thanks for the insight, I needed a reminder of the 'timing' thing. Looking for a way to open the door sounds like a good idea, I do that with friends but haven't with strangers before. Thank you again!

Hi Andrea;

Like Bryan taught today from Proverbs - 25:11 - "A word aptly spoken is like apples of gold in setting of silver." Knowing the right thing to say at the right time in the right place - that's my take on that proverb. In order to be confrontive, directive, or provide spiritual direction or correction there have to be several things in place: 1) a relationship with the person (we have to earn the right to be heard - some level of trust in who we are to say what we say), 2) the right time and place (in a public place where someone is working may not be the right place & time), and a clear open gesture to want to hear.

The case you share, I would look for a way to open the door or continue the conversation. "Can I pray for you?" "Can I contact you later to talk about this more?" "I know this sounds a bit strange, but could I be a listening ear over coffee - I'll buy?" "Do you have a break soon?" Etc. The key is to be Spirit sensitive (listening to how He's leading) and being creative.

The fact is lots of people believe all kinds of lies about God, themselves and the way the world is. We can't change it all and short "canned" retorts seldom change the person. The folks who helped me see the stupid things I believed were usually folks I know and trust.

Glen

Good afternoon Glen,

I've got another question for you. I've always had quite a few people, Christians and non-Christians, friends and complete strangers, tell me about their troubles and what's going on in their life. Some accept responsibility for the consequences of their actions, deal with it and get help/move past it and press on. Others, however, place blame on God or another person/group of people, or they claim 'God is testing me to see how much I can take.' Well, I disagree with that. Usually because the problems they're telling me of are a direct result of sins in their lives, sins that they either don't see or don't want to see. So, here's my question: how do I respond to people when they say something like that? The other day I almost blurted out to a cashier, 'you're having these troubles because of the life you're living! Can't you see your own sins?!'. But I didn't. I listened to her and asked her if she believes in God and told her about Jesus and how he came to save us all and that she would benefit from a healing, non-judgmental church. She listened to me, but got a haughty look in her eye and shut down when I told her that it's important to forgive others, because God forgives us. When I left to run my other errands I could still hear her words, 'He is testing me to see how much I can take.' It made me weep. I don't have the slightest idea how to respond when someone says something like that. I sure don't want to go with my gut reaction and reach out and shake the person! I certainly need to be shook to see my own sins sometimes, but I've the privelege of knowing God...so it's easier for me to accept that 'shaking'.

Thanks so much,
Andrea

Hello Bill! Just wondering if the forums are "advertised" in any way. I think PCC is a rather large church and it seems like no one is using the forum. Maybe they forgot it's here? I know there are a lot of people hurting and so I would have expected more "action" here. Thank you!
